In 1865, Walt Whitman, saddened by the outcome of the American Civil War, composed the elegy ‘O Captain My Captain’ in remembrance of fallen American President Abraham Lincoln. The ‘O Captain My Captain’ became one of his most famous, to where Whitman nearly regretted composing it afterwards. ‘O Captain My Captain’, like another of Whitman’s poems, ‘When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d,’ was written in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s death in 1865, and differs significantly from much of Whitman’s best-known poetry because it has a more regular rhyme scheme.
